Our Process

A page dedicated to learning more about the art of candle making and the process involved in the creation of your scented home fragrance gifts.

HAND POURED vs HAND POURED
The home fragrance market is huge, with lots of businesses large and small all vying for your custom, but it's important to remember that there's a clear difference between the handmade luxury market and the mass produced high street product ranges.

You may be wondering what the difference is, between a £5 scented candle and our £25 candles of the same weight?

At illumigi, each and every candle, reed diffuser and tealight is individually poured by hand. We don't use large machines, an actual human carefully pours each item until the weighing scales hit the minimum required net weight for the product. There's more too...

FRAGRANCE OILS
All illumigi fragrance oils are Paraben and Phthalate Free. We use non-GMO soy blends in our candle making process and all of our fragrance oils are certified as Vegan-Friendly, with no animal products used during the making process or even during testing.

All of our oils and waxes are purchased from fellow UK based businesses, we don't import anything ourselves to reduce the cost, we only use verifiable and long established UK based suppliers for all of our raw materials...

THE MAKING PROCESS
There's a lot to the candle making process, it's not simply a case of pouring some wax in to a glass. Here's a brief overview:

For our scented candles, we ensure that the room temperature of our studio is maintained at 22 degrees, we pre-clean each glass and warm them to 25 degrees before we start the hand pouring process.

Our fragrance oils and melted waxes are blended at exact temperatures, stirred for a set period of time and then cooled to the correct pouring temperature for the vessel.

During the hand pouring process, each item is placed on a set of digital scales, to ensure we reach the minimum net weight as printed on the label. After pouring, our products are placed on to drying racks, that allow air to distribute fully around the container, ensuring a higher quality drying process.

All of our candles are made using a natural soy wax, which takes a little time to absorb the fragrance oils and realise the maximum cold and hot throw requirements of our customers. So, our candles are stored on drying racks for a minimum of 5 days, to allow them to set fully and adhere to the container.

After this process is completed, we then move on to boxing your order.

PACKAGING
At illumigi, all of our packaging is sourced with suppliers that carry the FSC Approved label. We've also taken away any plastic from our product packaging and delivery boxes, making the entire process fully recyclable.

Each item is placed in a luxury gift box, we include a safety leaflet and each item is paper wrapped.

Once sealed, the box is then wrapped in a biodegradable/compostable film that is designed to break down and disappear after a few months if placed in to landfill. The purpose for the wrap, is to protect the box from finger prints or damage during transit. Our boxes can be ripped or chipped, as they're made from recyclable cardboard, so we wrap them in film before handing to our courier, to ensure your order is protected during transit.

PRODUCT SAFETY
It goes without saying, product safety is very important in the home fragrance business!

All of our candles, reed diffusers and tea lights are CLP Labelled, we also have a copy of the ingredients used for each batch during the making process. All items are barcoded and include a safety sheet in the box for reference.
